Periodontal disease is not “curable.”
Once you have periodontal disease, it can’t be cured. It can only be corrected and maintained to more desirable levels of healthy gum and bone structure. Maintaining the health of your teeth and gums, especially after perio surgery, is vital. Once your periodontal treatment is completed, regular visits and frequent check-ups by your dentist or hygienist are very important. They will continue to check the depth of periodontal pockets and the health of the surrounding gum tissue. This makes sure your periodontal disease is not recurring.
At home cleaning is essential. Don’t depend on your hygienist alone to keep periodontal disease under control! Help them help you by learning proper oral hygiene, such as the correct way to brush and floss. Your dentist or hygienist will show you the proper way to clean your teeth. And if you smoke, ask your dentist or hygienist for recommendations on how to stop – tobacco contains chemicals that can actually slow the healing process and make the results of your treatment less predictable!
- Schedule cleaning and check-ups often and at regular intervals
- Reduce plaque and tartar build up with proper at-home brushing and flossing
- Stop smoking and give your body a chance to heal
It only takes a few minutes a day to keep periodontal disease at bay!
